Visit the Oceano Dunes Recreational Area, formerly known as Pismo Dunes SVRA, and feel like you’re in the middle of an immense desert, while having the convenience of a beach right next door. This sand dune recreational area is a unique geological gem. It provides an incredible playground for off-highway enthusiasts and ATV riders from throughout the United States.
It is one of the several OHV areas administered by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Post 2 is one mile south on the beach from Pier Avenue and marks the beginning of the OHV area. In addition to being a great place for OHV users to have the time of their lives, Oceano Dunes also allows visitors to partake in other activities, such as swimming, surfing, surf fishing, camping, and hiking.
“One of the few beaches that you can drive on and camp, dunes galore for riding thrills, grocery store and gas station close by,” wrote TripAdvisor.com user, “Oceanogary.”
Many visitors come to the dunes and intend to stay overnight. The park allows guests to camp south of Post 2 on the beach and in the open dune area. Campsites do have access to vault toilets and chemical toilets. Water-delivery and holding-tank pump-out services are also available on the beach. Campsites are available all year-round. Make them seven months to 48 hours in advance by calling-800-444-7275.
Be aware that reserving a campsite to the Oceano Dunes Recreational Area is especially recommended now after a recent review of the Operating Permit issued by the California Coastal Commission. Now, the recreational area needs to limit the number of OHVs allowed in the park at a time. This new requirement is likely to have the greatest impact on OHV users visiting the area for the day, especially during busier periods like the holidays and summer weekends.
Enjoy one of California’s greatest geological playground with a visit to Oceano Dunes Recreational Area.
